The Ruins Of Old Nalanda

2016 // 5'
for violin and marimba
commissioned by Sharan Leventhal
premiered February 26, 2016 by Marimolin at The Boston Conservatory

Program Note:

Nalanda was an ancient Indian Buddhist university, active between the sixth and thirteenth centuries CE. Many of the great practitioners of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism studied there, developing techniques and philosophies still in use today. The foundations of many of the buildings are still intact, as is much of its artwork.

The Ruins Of Old Nalanda abstractly depicts the life of the university, as well as the passage of time that led to its fall and subsequent excavation. All things, even the greatest of institutions, are impermanent.

Instrumentation:

violin, marimba
